Develop Advanced Lean Leadership Capability with a Lean Master Certification

This program is designed for participants who want to move beyond Lean tools and develop the capability to lead operational improvement at a systems level. Participants learn how to design and manage the interconnected elements that drive performance, including strategy deployment, flow, pull systems, standard work, daily management, and continuous improvement.

The Lean Master program emphasizes Lean as a management system, not a collection of isolated Lean improvement projects. Participants develop the ability to identify systemic inefficiencies, align work to customer value, improve organizational agility, and create environments where problem solving and continuous improvement become part of daily operations.

Lean Master Program Design

About the Lean Master Program

Course length: 10 weeks

Most Lean programs emphasize tools, events, and isolated improvements. This program is built on a different premise: Lean is a system for managing work.

The Lean Master Certification Program is designed for participants who need to move beyond tool application and develop the capability to design, connect, and sustain Lean management systems. The focus is not on doing more Lean improvement projects, but on changing how decisions are made, how work is structured, and how performance is managed day to day.

The program is organized around a set of integrated elements: defining value and strategic direction, understanding the current condition of the value stream, establishing standard work as the foundation of stability, designing flow while actively managing constraints, and integrating pull systems to manage flow, inventory, and demand variability. These elements are treated as interdependent. When applied in isolation, they produce limited results. When connected through a management system, they change how the organization operates.

A central emphasis is placed on daily management, visibility, and people development. Participants learn how to make performance and problems visible, how to establish leader standard work that reinforces expectations, and how to create the conditions for continuous improvement to occur as part of normal operations.

In many Lean efforts, decisions are still based on static analysis and intuition, even in complex environments. This program takes a different approach. Participants learn to build and use process models to test scenarios, understand variability, quantify trade-offs, and evaluate the financial implications of operational decisions. Participants also learn how to translate improvement outcomes into leadership-relevant measures such as cost impact, capacity creation, investment justification, and return on investment so they can provide leadership with clear, evidence-based recommendations.

The outcome is not just a practitioner who applies Lean tools more effectively. It is a participant who can design Lean systems of work, align management practices, and influence decisions at a broader organizational level.

Participants are expected to complete certification requirements within 12 months, including the application of Lean system design and modeling concepts to a real organizational challenge. The expectation is not simply completion, but demonstration of system-level thinking and impact.

Program Deliverables

Upon completing the Lean Master Certification Program, attendees should be equipped to:

  • Design and sustain Lean management systems that connect strategic intent to daily execution, rather than relying on periodic Lean improvement efforts.
  • Establish standard work and leader standard work that create stability, reinforce expectations, and make deviations visible.
  • Design for optimal flow and actively manage constraints across systems, recognizing that local optimization often degrades overall performance.
  • Establish and refine pull systems that appropriately balance flow, inventory, and responsiveness in the presence of variability.
  • Model and simulate processes to evaluate alternatives, quantify trade-offs, and provide leadership with more rigorous decision support.
  • Translate analysis into action by aligning Lean management practices, not just implementing Lean tools, addressing the structural causes of resistance and inconsistency.
  • Embed problem solving and continuous improvement into daily management so that issues are surfaced and addressed as part of normal work.
  • Quantify and communicate the financial impact of improvement initiatives to leadership.

Program Schedule

The Lean Master Certification Program combines online learning, applied work, and in-person instruction to ensure participants can connect Lean systems thinking to real organizational challenges.

Participants progress through a sequence of online coursework and virtual study sessions, culminating in a week-long, in-person training experience. This structure is intentional: concepts are introduced, tested in practice, and then refined through deeper discussion and hands-on application.

Admission includes a brief virtual interview. This is not a formality; it ensures participants enter the program with relevant experience and allows instructors to tailor discussions to the realities participants are facing in their organizations.

Certification is awarded upon successful completion of all program components, including coursework, an examination (minimum score of 80%), and the delivery of three applied projects.

These projects are expected to demonstrate more than tool usage. Participants must show the ability to apply Lean as a system—connecting strategic intent to execution, improving flow and pull, and strengthening daily management and problem solving within their teams and organizations.
